At Shorty Pants Lounge, The Rum Is Never Gone!

August 16 each year is designated as National Rum Day. When you visit the best waterfront bar at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can celebrate Rum Day any day your heart desires! Not only do we have a wonderful selection of rums behind the bar at Shorty Pants Lounge & Marina, but our talented bartenders also know how to mix a pretty mean cocktail with them too.

Rum History
Rum is a distilled alcoholic beverage made by a process of fermentation and distillation from sugarcane byproducts, like molasses for example. The liquid starts out clear, but gains a darker color after aging in oak barrels. This tasty liquor is made all over the world, but the majority of it is produced in the Caribbean and Latin America.

There are drinks dating back to antiquity that seem to be precursors to modern-day rum. The very first fermented drinks made by using sugarcane juice is believed to have been either in ancient India or China.

Stories say that the first distillation of rum happened on the sugarcane plantations of the Caribbean in the 17th century. Slaves discovered that they could ferment the molasses into alcohol. Later on, as the distillation process was perfected, the alcohol was concentrated and the impurities were removed.
Types of Rum
Depending on how the rum is prepared and aged, different types are produced. Here are a few that you are most likely to see when you head to the bar for a cocktail.
  • Light Rum: This can also be called "silver" or "white" rum. It has a mild, light flavor and is used in many mixed cocktails. The rum's color is removed by filtering it after the aging process.
  • Gold Rum: Medium-bodied rum that gains it's darker color from being aged in wooden barrels. The end flavor is influenced by the type of barrel it is aged in. It can also be referred to as "amber," and it has a stronger taste than light rum.
  • Dark Rum: Still darker and stronger in flavor, dark rums are aged longer than the other two varieties above. Heavily charred barrels for aging give them their strong flavor.
  • Overproof Rum: This type of rum has a much higher alcohol content than regular rums. 151 is a popular choice for a floater in our drinks.
  • Spiced Rum: These are generally based on gold rums. Spices such as cinnamon, vanilla, allspice, ginger, black currant, pepper, and more can be used to add flavor.
  • Flavored Rum: Fruits are used to infuse rum with flavors that make very tasty cocktails, but are also pretty good alone over ice.

Rum Cocktails

Shorty Pants Lounge has a wide variety of rum drinks that pair perfectly with the best Cajun food at the Lake of the Ozarks. These are a few of our most popular drinks, but if you have another favorite in mind and we have the right ingredients, our bartenders are more than happy to mix it up for you.

  • Rum Runner
  • Pina Colada
  • Pain in the A** (Rum Runner & Pina Colada combined)
  • Strawberry Daiquiri
  • Miami Vice (Strawberry Daiquiri & Pina Colada combined)
  • Mojito
  • Lake Water

There is something so relaxing about sipping a delicious rum drink on a hot day while enjoying a gorgeous lake view. Our Lake of the Ozarks waterfront bar & restaurant is the perfect place to do just that. When you're ready for a bit of rum and relaxation yourself, head on over to Shorty Pants Lounge & Marina. We'll take good care of you!

Catfish Delish with a Cajun Twist! It's National Catfish Month

The month of August is dedicated to many different things, but one in particular has our mouths watering - National Catfish Month! You will find some irresistible catfish dishes on the menu at our Lake of the Ozarks waterfront restaurant, many with that special Shorty Pants Lounge "Cajun twist" that we're famous for.

Catfish Fun Facts

  • Our State Fish: Fellow Missourians may be surprised to find out that the Channel Catfish is actually the state fish of the Show-Me-State.
  • NOT a Cat: Catfish are not a part of the feline family. (We hope that is obvious!) They were given the name due to the barbels around their mouths that resemble the whiskers on a cat.
  • New Holiday: Congress declared August as National Catfish Month in the late 1980's to recognize the impact that the catfish industry made to our American economy. This tasty fish gets its own national day each year on June 25.
  • Healthy Eating: The American Heart Association recommends eating at least 2 servings of seafood a week. This is a good way to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Catfish is moderately fatty, a very good source of high quality protein, and it contains no carbohydrates. This particular fish is also an excellent source of vitamin B-12. Good-for-you food that also tastes great!
  • Over 100,000 Taste Buds: Not only do they taste great to eat, but the actual fish has a greater sense of taste than just about any other animal, including us! Since they tend to spend their lives searching the bottom of murky water, they need the extra taste buds to find food they cannot see. For comparison, a person has about 10,000 taste buds in their mouth, while catfish have at least 100,000 all over their bodies, and it is possible for some species to have up to 180,000!

Catfish - Shorty Pants Style

Now that you know a little more about this interesting fish, here comes the really important stuff... all the ways you can order it for lunch of dinner at our waterfront Cajun restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks

Catifsh BLT
A hand-breaded catfish filet served with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and our Cajun mayo on a toasted French roll. You can have the catfish fried or blackened.

Catfish Po Boy
A Cajun classic! Southern-fried catfish, homemade with Cajun mayo, lettuce, and tomato. If you prefer, we can serve this one blackened instead of fried. This sandwich, as well as the Catfish BLT, come with your choice of one side dish.

Catfish Dinner
Two hand-breaded catfish filets, fried to a golden brown, served with house-made tartar sauce. This is also available blackened. It's served alongside a side salad or mini Caesar salad, your choice of one side dish, and either French bread or cornbread.

Smothered Catfish
A catfish filet, either fried or blackened, served on a bed of rice, smothered in our amazing crawfish etouffee. This is served with a small salad and either French bread or corn bread.

Whether you're already a catfish lover or it's a fish you still need to try, the month of August has just given you a perfect excuse to make a meal out of it! Catfish is abundant in the Lake of the Ozarks, but its a lot easier to skip the work and simply come on in to our family friendly waterfront restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks and let us take care of the cooking for you! Happy National Catfish Month!

Our Delicious Cajun Po Boys and Specialty Sandwiches

Shorty Pants Lounge is well-known for having the best Cajun food at the Lake of the Ozarks. We achieve this by using only the tastiest rubs and spices direct from Louisiana. That Creole goodness can be found throughout our extensive menu, and is strongly featured in our delicious sandwich options.

Not every sandwich on our menu is considered "Cajun." You'll also find some incredible ones featuring seafood, steak, and award-winning pulled pork. Every sandwich we serve comes with your choice of a side dish, or you can upgrade to one of our signature sides for a small additional charge. By the time we put all of that together on a plate, you've got the makings of one mouthwatering meal!

We couldn't possibly own the best Cajun restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks and not include this classic sandwich. It's a popular New Orleans treat, and we believe our versions stand up to the very best in Louisiana.

Catfish Po Boy
Southern fried catfish, homemade with Cajun mayo, lettuce, and tomato. If you prefer, you can have it blackened instead of fried.

Andouille Sausage Po Boy
Smoked Cajun sausage and our homemade remoulade sauce served with shredded lettuce and tomato.

Oyster Po Boy
Big gulf oysters deep-fried golden brown on French bread with lettuce, tomato, and homemade Cajun mayo.

Shrimp Po Boy
A delicious combination of hand-breaded shrimp, lettuce, tomato, and house made Cajun mayo.

While the Po Boys are a very popular item on our menu, the specialty sandwiches we've created are hard to resist. Most of them have our own Cajun twist included, but you'll find plenty of flavors to please every taste.

Fried Green Tomato BLT
A big, meaty BLT with fried green tomatoes, bacon, shredded lettuce, and our house made Cajun mayo.

B.L.T.A. Chicken
A grilled chicken breast topped with crisp bacon, fresh avocado, shredded lettuce, and tomato, served on Asiago Focaccia bread.

Catfish BLT
A hand-breaded catfish filet served with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and our Cajun mayo on a toasted French roll. You may want to try this one blackened.

Cajun Club
We stuff this one on sourdough bread with smoked turkey, ham, bacon, Swiss and American cheeses, lettuce, and tomato with our Cajun mayo.

Jack Daniels Glazed Chicken
You'll love this marinated and grilled Tennessee whiskey glazed chicken, served on Asiago Focaccia bread with lettuce, tomato, and onion.

Asiago Chicken Sandwich
A delicious grilled chicken breast topped with grilled onions, white American cheese, and a sweet Balsamic sauce.

Blackened Creole Chicken
Blackened chicken with sauteed peppers and onions topped with Pepper Jack cheese and served on a toasted Kaiser.

Pulled Pork Sandwich
Our award-winning Wobbly Boots Roadhouse recipe, piled high on a toasted Kaiser and served with Wobbly Boots BBQ sauce.

Steak 'N' Cheese
Strips of beef tenderloin grilled and smothered in white American cheese on a toasted French roll. Up the flavor by adding sauteed mushrooms, onions, or green peppers.

Ahi Tuna Sandwich
6-oz Sashimi grade tuna, sesame seed encrusted and cooked to your liking. It's served as a sandwich or over a bed or rice with our house remoulade dressing. This one is great blackened too!

Grilled Chicken Breast
Shorty's large grilled chicken breast garnished with lettuce, tomato, and onion and served on a toasted Kaiser.

Those are 15 delicious items that can tackle any hunger, but the incredible menu at our Lake of the Ozarks waterfront restaurant offers a LOT more where those came from! You can see the entire Shorty Pants Lounge & Marina menu on our website, or better yet, come on in and see it in person. Sign Up For The Change Of Heart Fun Run At Shorty Pants Lounge

Our Lake of the Ozarks waterfront restaurant is proud to be a part of the Change of Heart Fun Run next Sunday, July 23, 2017 from 2-6 pm. This charity event to raise awareness for the overwhelming need for organ donation and transplants is sponsored by Above & Beyond Roofing, and the run itself will both begin and end right here at Shorty Pants Lounge, with a fun party planned to go along with it!

Fun Run Details
The Change of Heart Fun Run involves a 164-foot (0.05K) walk/run starting at Shorty Pants Lounge at 3 pm, with registration beginning at 2 pm. There will be a quick stop for a refreshing drink along the course before turning around and heading back to our family friendly Lake of the Ozarks waterfront restaurant. You can pre-register at for $25, or register on-site the day of the event for $30.

The money raised from the Change of Heart Fun Run supports Donate Life. Funds will be used to allow a lucky family of up to 4 travel to the 2018 Transplant Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. These games are a multi-sport festival event to promote the need for organ & tissue donation, and to show the world that transplantation is a treatment that really does work. Over the years these games have become a wonderful place where transplant and donor families can come together.

Live Music & Live Auction
Once you finish that "exhausting" trip, the amazing Barefoot Entertainer himself, Mr. Dale Blue, will be here to rock the house! It's never a dull time when Dale hits the stage, and this wonderful cause is sure to have him showing off his entertaining best.

Rick Bryant will be on hand to host a live auction full of high-end items that you can bid on. You get to pick up some great stuff and help this worthy cause at the same time! That day will also be your last chance to purchase raffle tickets to win 1 of 2 guns and a large flat-screen TV.

Not A Runner?
You don't have to sign up for the run/walk to help out this worthy cause. You can join us at Shorty Pants Lounge & Marina just to buy raffle tickets and bid on items in the live auction. If you can't make it out on July 23, you can also make a donation through the registration website. Donate as little or as much as you would like, because everything helps.

Please mark your calendars to join us at our Lake of the Ozarks Cajun restaurant for the Change of Heart Fun Run sponsored by Above & Beyond Roofing. We'll all have an amazing time together making a difference for this wonderful cause.

Stay With Us When You Visit The Lake In Our Incredible Rental Houses

Shorty Pants Lounge & Marina has the best food and drinks, incredible customer service, awesome gas dock, amazing lake view, and the best vacation rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks. Since our two rental houses are located right next door to the restaurant and marina, everything is located conveniently within walking distance of each other.

"Wow!! I absolutely LOVED our experience. Ashley was so nice and easy to work with. The house was better than it appears in the photos & can't wait till my next girls trip to book this house again. Great location with the bar located 100 yards from our back door. The house was extremely clean & was stocked with towels, coffee filters, paper towels, which makes the whole trip easier. Highly recommend this location!"
~Johnna D, rental site review

Both of our Lake of the Ozarks vacation rental houses include all the comforts of home, including a beautifully appointed kitchen, a washer and dryer, and all the necessary appliances needed for everyday living. Gorgeous decks for entertaining and enjoying that fantastic lake view are also present. The houses are centrally located so that all of the best spots in the lake area are only a short car trip or boat ride away.

Why spend your nights cramped up in a small hotel room when you can stay in one of our comfortable and spacious rental houses? You can spread out and enjoy all of that extra space yourself, or there is plenty of room to bring a few friends or family members with you. If you invite someone to join you for a vacation at the Lake of the Ozarks, more than likely you'll get a great big, enthusiastic "Yes!"

The Glass House
This vacation rental features 1,500 square feet of living space, lakefront access, and breathtaking panoramic lake views. It sleeps up to 8 guests comfortably with 2 queen size beds, 1 full bed, and a sleeper sofa in the living room. There are 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a 44-foot deck.

"The house is adorable and very clean. Just steps from Shorty Pants restaurant which made dinner easy. They also have a marina which made forgetting a toothbrush an easy fix. Ashley was great to communicate with and left her cell number on the chalkboard inside in case we needed anything. Myself and 7 other girls had a great experience!"

~Brandi B, rental site review

You can check availability for the rental houses by following their links from the Shorty Pants Lounge & Marina website. As of right now, the Glass House is available July 14-20, which also happens to be AquaPalooza 2017 at Dog Days Bar & Grill! It's the single largest 1-day boating event at the Lake of the Ozarks. You'd better hurry if you want to book it, because it may not be available for long. It is also available for booking a few weekdays in July, and anytime in August after the 6th.

The Red House
This house offers more space at 3,400 square feet. It has 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, lakefront access, a full kitchen, 2 incredible decks, and the same breathtaking panoramic lake view.

The Red House has been extremely popular with big groups visiting the lake area. All of the weekends for July and August are already booked, but we do have some weekdays available. September, after Labor Day, is wide open, and that's a perfect time to enjoy the Lake of the Ozarks. The weather is still great, the seasonal attractions are still open, and the crowds are a bit smaller.

"I cannot say enough wonderful things about this rental. We had a group of 8 and would have had space for several more. I was able to reach out to Ashley regarding a mishap with the coffee maker and received a response in minutes. She was so helpful and did everything in her power to make sure our trip was perfect. The house itself is AMAZING! 2 full floors of living space, decorated perfectly and the screened in/covered patio was a life saver on the days that it rained but we still wanted to be outside.

The location of the house is so convenient, being located next door to Shorty Pants Bar and Marina. Our group wanted to explore the local wineries and we were centrally located between them all also, with the furthest one being only about 25 minutes away.

I would recommend this rental property to anyone and hope that I have the opportunity to come back in the future!
~Danielle K, rental site review

We would love for you to stay with us when you visit the lake area. As we mentioned earlier, you can see the availability of our Lake of the Ozarks vacation rental houses on our website, and even book directly from each house's page.
